Abstract

This study investigates the improvement of wind turbine efficiency through the application of backward sweep winglet tip blade designs on the NREL Phase VI turbine operating under low offshore wind speed conditions. The fluid flow analysis was conducted numerically using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method with ANSYS Fluent as the simulation tool. The design variations consisted of sweep angles of 25°, 50°, and 60°, which were evaluated at five wind speed conditions ranging from 5 to 15 m/s. The simulation results indicate that torque and power output increase with wind speed for all configurations; however, the power coefficient (Cp) reaches its optimum value at low wind speeds. The backward sweep winglet with a 25° angle provides the highest Cp value of 0.378 at a wind speed of 5 m/s, indicating the most efficient aerodynamic performance among the tested designs. At higher wind speeds, the efficiency decreases due to increased aerodynamic losses. These findings confirm that the backward sweep winglet tip blade is most suitable for low wind speed environments. Therefore, this design is recommended for the development of offshore wind turbines in Indonesian coastal regions characterized by low wind speed conditions.
