Abstract

In the era of globalization, a country’s economic growth is inseparable from the role of investment and capital market activities. The capital market serves as a vehicle for companies to raise funds while providing opportunities for investors to allocate their capital. The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) acts as the primary benchmark for assessing capital market performance in Indonesia. The fluctuations of the IHSG are inevitably influenced by macroeconomic factors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of inflation, interest rates, the Rupiah exchange rate, and the Nasdaq 100 Index on the Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) during the observation period from 2008 to 2024. This research utilizes secondary monthly time-series data from January 2008 to December 2024, totaling 204 observations, sourced from IDX Finance, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Bank Indonesia, the Ministry of Trade of Indonesia, and Yahoo Finance. This study employs the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method to analyze the influence of each variable on the IHSG in both the long run and the short run. The short-term findings indicate that inflation and the exchange rate have a significant negative impact on the IHSG, as the weakening of the Rupiah signals investors to withdraw foreign capital from the Indonesian capital market. Conversely, the Nasdaq 100 contributes a significant positive influence, as it is often used as a primary barometer for measuring global risk sentiment. However, interest rates were found to have no effect on the IHSG in the short term. In the long-term analysis, only the exchange rate variable shows a significant negative effect. Inflation, interest rates, and the Nasdaq 100 do not influence the movements of the IHSG in the long run. Simultaneously, all independent variables have a significant effect on the Jakarta Composite Index.
