Abstract
Beef consumption constitutes an important indicator of nutritional adequacy and overall societal welfare. However, the level of beef consumption in Indonesia remains relatively low and displays considerable disparities across provinces. This study aims to analyze the effects of income, beef prices, and population size on beef consumption in 34 provinces of Indonesia. The analysis employs secondary data covering the period from 2020 to 2024, obtained from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and the National Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS), and applies a panel data regression methodology. The empirical results indicate that income has a positive and statistically significant effect on beef consumption, implying that higher income levels increase consumers’ purchasing power for animal-based protein sources. Conversely, beef prices exhibit a negative and statistically significant influence, suggesting that price increases tend to suppress consumption. Furthermore, population size demonstrates a positive and significant relationship with beef consumption, indicating that provinces with larger populations tend to generate higher aggregate demand for beef. Overall, the findings underscore that beef consumption in Indonesia is predominantly influenced by economic and demographic factors, particularly income levels, price dynamics, and population size.
