Abstract
This study aims to analyse the effect of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) welding speed variation and pipe thickness on the mechanical strength of welded joints in ASTM A105 carbon steel pipes used in the oil and gas industry. The welding speeds investigated were 6 mm/min, 12 mm/min, and 18 mm/min, with pipe thicknesses of 4 mm and 5 mm. The welding process was carried out using the SMAW method, after which tensile test specimens were prepared in accordance with relevant standards and tested to obtain stress–strain data. Each parameter variation was tested three times to ensure representative results. The results indicate that welding speed and pipe thickness significantly influence the mechanical properties of the welded joints. Based on the average tensile test results, a welding speed of 6 mm/min produced the highest ultimate tensile strength (UTS) for both pipe thicknesses, indicating that higher heat input promotes better fusion and stronger welded joints. A welding speed of 12 mm/min exhibited a more balanced mechanical response with improved ductility, while a welding speed of 18 mm/min resulted in lower strength and ductility due to insufficient heat input. In addition, pipes with a thickness of 5 mm consistently showed higher tensile strength than those with a thickness of 4 mm. Therefore, a welding speed of 6 mm/min is identified as the most optimal welding parameter for oil and gas pipeline applications.
