Abstract
Caffeine consumption is a common habit among university students to enhance alertness and academic performance; however, it may affect sleep quality and mental health. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between caffeine consumption and sleep quality as well as mental health among Indonesian university students through a literature review. A descriptive literature review design was applied, with articles retrieved from Google Scholar, Neliti, and GARUDA databases published between 2020 and 2025. Through the processes of identification, screening, and selection based on inclusion criteria, nine relevant articles were included in the analysis. The findings indicated that the relationship between caffeine consumption and sleep quality and mental health was varied. Several studies reported significant associations with sleep disturbances and anxiety, while others found no statistically significant relationship. Low to moderate caffeine intake consumed at appropriate times tended to provide positive effects on focus, mood, and cognitive and physical performance without significantly disrupting sleep. In contrast, high doses, frequent consumption, or intake close to bedtime increased the risk of sleep disturbances and anxiety symptoms, particularly among individuals with high caffeine sensitivity. Overall, caffeine exhibits dual effects depending on dosage, timing of consumption, and individual characteristics; therefore, prudent regulation of caffeine consumption is necessary to support optimal sleep quality and mental health among university students. Future studies are recommended to employ longitudinal designs and consider factors such as stress, sleep quality, physical activity, and individual sensitivity to caffeine to clarify the causal relationship between caffeine consumption and mental health.
