Abstract
Globalization encourages cooperation and trade between countries, known as international trade, to meet the needs of countries, which creates international economic transactions. A good international economy can be seen in transactions in the balance of payments summarized into an overall balance where its movements can be influenced by other economic factors. While Indonesia's international economy, through liberalization and structural reform policies, has succeeded in strengthening Indonesia's global economic integration, its effectiveness is still hampered by logistical inefficiencies, regulatory uncertainty, and vulnerability to commodity price volatility and international financial market dynamics. This study aims to analyze the impact of the exchange rate, GDP, net exports, and foreign debt on the balance of payments in Indonesia from 1990 to 2023. Data obtained are secondary data for an annual period totaling 34 observations and taken from the World Bank and Statistics Indonesia databases. This type of research is a time series using the Error Correction Model (ECM) research method to examine the influence of each variable in the long and short term. This study found that the exchange rate, net exports, and foreign debt variables have no significant effect on Indonesia's balance of payments, while the GDP variable has a significant and positive effect on Indonesia's balance of payments in the long term. Furthermore, the exchange rate and foreign debt variables do not significantly influence Indonesia's balance of payments, while GDP and net exports have a significant and positive influence on Indonesia's balance of payments in the short term.
