Abstract
North Sulawesi Province possesses abundant natural resources and strong economic potential. However, this condition is not reflected in labor market participation, as the region recorded the lowest average Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) compared to 34 other provinces in Indonesia during 2011–2023. This situation raises questions regarding the factors underlying low labor participation. This study aims to examine how population, economic growth, and the Human Development Index (HDI) influence LFPR in North Sulawesi. The research applies a quantitative approach using panel data from 15 regencies/cities over 13 years (195 observations) and is analyzed through panel regression with a Fixed Effect approach. The findings indicate that population size does not have a significant partial effect on LFPR. Conversely, economic growth and HDI show significant effects on labor force participation. However, when tested simultaneously, all three variables jointly demonstrate a significant influence on LFPR, with an overall R-squared value of 0.09 percent. These results imply that demographic factors have not yet contributed significantly to improving the participation rate of the productive-aged population, while economic development and human quality play a more dominant role in shaping the labor market in North Sulawesi.
