Abstract

Income inequality represents a critical issue in economic development, arising from uneven income distribution among social groups in regional areas such as Sumatra Island. This study aims to analyze the effects of structural transformation, mean years of schooling, and government expenditure on income inequality in Sumatra Island. The sample consists of 10 provinces in Sumatra Island over the period 2015–2023. The data used in this study are secondary data obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics. The analytical method employed is the fixed effect model of panel data regression, with estimation conducted using Feasible Generalized Least Squares in Stata 17. Partially, the results indicate that structural transformation has a negative but insignificant effect on income inequality, while mean years of schooling and government expenditure have negative and significant effects on income inequality. The results also show that simultaneously the four independent variables affect income inequality.
