Abstract
Ankle fractures are common musculoskeletal injuries, yet evidence linking obesity to fibular fracture patterns remains inconsistent. This study aimed to analyze the association between obesity and fibular fracture types using Danis–Weber classification. The study was conducted at Fatmawati General Hospital during the period from 2023 to 2025. This observational analytic study applied a cross sectional design using secondary hospital medical record data. Patients aged 18 59 years with closed ankle fractures meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. Obesity was defined as a body mass index of at least 25 kg/m². The Asia Pacific body mass index classification criteria were applied. Fibular fracture patterns were classified according to the Danis–Weber classification system. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Chi-square statistical test. A total of 122 patients met the study inclusion criteria. The sample consisted of 61 obese patients and 61 normal patients. Danis–Weber type B fractures were most frequent, followed by type C and type A. No significant association was found between obesity and fibular fracture patterns (p = 0.462). Obesity was not significantly associated with fibular fracture patterns based on Danis–Weber classification. These findings suggest that additional factors should be considered when assessing ankle fracture severity.
