Abstract

Obesity is a chronic metabolic condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue and may induce oxidative stress and liver damage. One indicator of hepatocellular injury is an increase in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels. Moringa oleifera fruits are known to contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, polyphenols, and vitamin C, which have potential antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Moringa oleifera fruit extract on hepatic LDH levels in obese Sprague Dawley rats. This study employed a post-test only control group design involving 30 rats divided into five groups: normal control, negative control (high-fat diet), positive control (vitamin C 15 mg/kg body weight), and two treatment groups receiving Moringa oleifera fruit extract at a dose of 500 mg/kg body weight administered once and twice daily. Obesity was induced for 49 days, followed by treatment according to group allocation. LDH levels were measured using a spectrophotometric method. The results demonstrated significant differences in LDH levels among the experimental groups (p < 0.05). Administration of Moringa oleifera fruit extract significantly reduced LDH levels compared to the negative control; however, the reduction was lower than that observed in the vitamin C group. In conclusion, Moringa oleifera fruit extract shows potential as a hepatoprotective agent in reducing LDH activity in an obese rat model.
