Abstract

The rapid demographic aging in Southeast Asia, driven by declining fertility rates and increasing life expectancy, poses significant challenges to economic growth and labor markets, particularly in emerging economies like Indonesia and Thailand. This phenomenon, often termed the "aging society," can strain dependency ratios and fiscal resources while potentially unlocking productivity gains from experienced older workers if supported by appropriate policies. This study investigates the impacts of demographic (elderly dependency ratio) and macroeconomic (Gross Domestic Product and inflation) factors on elderly productivity measured by labor force participation rates for individuals aged 60 and above in Indonesia and Thailand over the period 1990–2024. Utilizing panel data regression with a Fixed Effect Model (FEM) on secondary data sourced from CEIC Data and national statistical publications, the analysis reveals that the elderly dependency ratio and GDP have positive and significant effects on elderly productivity, indicating that a higher share of older adults can contribute to economic activity under favorable conditions. Conversely, inflation exerts a negative but insignificant influence, suggesting that price volatility is not a primary determinant. These findings imply that demographic aging can be transformed into economic opportunities through policies emphasizing skill development, and flexible employment.
