Abstract
Introduction: Arteriovenous shunts (AV shunts) are the primary vascular access for long-term hemodialysis, the success of which is determined by the maturation process. Type 2 diabetes mellitus can theoretically affect AV shunt maturation, but previous research results have been inconsistent. The gap in this research is the lack of clarity regarding this relationship in the hemodialysis patient population in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus and AV shunt outcomes in hemodialysis patients. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with data sources from the medical records of patients who underwent AV shunt procedures at Fatmawati General Hospital during the period 2019–2024. A total of 48 subjects who met the restriction criteria were analyzed. The success of AV shunt maturation was assessed based on clinical and functional criteria. The relationship analysis was performed using the Chi-square test. Results: The study subjects were predominantly aged 31–59 years, male, and of normal weight. A total of 58.3% of AV shunts successfully matured, while a significant proportion still failed to mature. Bivariate analysis showed no statistically significant relationship between type 2 DM and AV shunt maturation success (p = 0.343). Conclusion: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is not significantly associated with the outcome of AV shunt procedures in postoperative patients. These findings indicate that non-metabolic factors, such as local vascular conditions, surgical techniques, and vascular characteristics, play a greater role in determining the success of maturation. This implies the need for comprehensive evaluation of these factors in the planning and monitoring of hemodialysis vascular access. Keywords: arteriovenous shunt; type 2 diabetes mellitus; hemodialysis; arteriovenous fistula maturation
