Abstract
Introduction: Hormonal changes and lifestyle factors in menopausal women contribute to reduced bone mineral density. Caffeine intake is thought to influence bone metabolism, but current evidence remains inconsistent. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between caffeine intake and bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Method: A cross-sectional design with purposive sampling was employed. The study included 54 menopausal women aged 50–65 years with low to moderate stress levels and light to moderate physical activity. Participants with secondary osteoporosis, long-term use of medications affecting bone metabolism, endocrine, metabolic-nutritional, gastrointestinal, renal, or autoimmune diseases, as well as those classified as underweight, were excluded. Caffeine intake was assessed using the Caffeine Consumption Questionnaire–Revised (CCQ-R), while bone mineral density was measured using Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) with the Osteosys Sonost 3000 device. Results: The results showed that 29.6% of participants had osteoporosis, and the majority (46.3%) were categorized as having low caffeine intake. Chi-square analysis demonstrated no significant association between caffeine intake and bone mineral density (p = 0.588). Conclusion: Caffeine consumption was not significantly associated with bone mineral density in menopausal women. The implication of this finding is that caffeine consumption as a single factor has limited clinical relevance for osteoporosis risk. The absence of a significant association in this study may be related to the generally low to moderate levels of caffeine consumption among the participants.
