Abstract
Infertility has become a major reproductive health issue worldwide, affecting not only physical health but also the psychological and social well-being of couples of reproductive age. Male infertility may be influenced by multiple factors including unhealthy lifestyle, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, hormonal disorders, and certain chronic diseases. Hypertension is one medical condition implicated in this context. Hypertension is hypothesized to impair semen quality via vascular mechanisms, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction, which may affect sperm motility, morphology, and concentration in infertile men. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between hypertension and sperm motility, morphology, and concentration among infertile men at Rumah Sakit Pusat Angkatan Darat (RSPAD) Gatot Soebroto. This analytic observational study employed a crosssectional design using total sampling of medical records; 76 records met the inclusion criteria. Extracted secondary data included age, hypertension status, and semen parameters (motility, morphology, and concentration). Statistical analyses comprised descriptive statistics and appropriate bivariate testing. No significant association was observed between hypertension and sperm concentration (p = 0.359). Significant associations were found between hypertension and sperm motility (p = 0.005) and between hypertension and sperm morphology (p = 0.01). Based on these results, hypertension in the studied population of infertile men at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto was significantly associated with reduced motility and increased abnormal sperm morphology, but not with sperm concentration. These findings underscore the importance of blood pressure assessment and comprehensive semen parameter evaluation in infertile patients.
