Abstract

This study explored the relationship between workload and burnout among nurses working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Emergency Department (ED) at Ridwan Meuraksa Level II Military Hospital, East Jakarta. A quantitative analytic approach with a cross-sectional design was applied, involving all 39 nurses from both units through a total sampling technique. Data were obtained using standardized questionnaires and analyzed using the chi-square test. The findings revealed that most nurses were exposed to high workloads; however, burnout levels among respondents were predominantly low. Statistical analysis showed no significant association between workload and burnout in either the ICU or ED. These results indicate that burnout among critical care nurses may be shaped by factors beyond workload alone, such as organizational support and work environment. Therefore, continuous institutional support, effective workload management, and mental health promotion are essential to sustain nurses’ wellbeing and the quality of healthcare services.
