Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between caffeine intake and sleep quality with vascular elasticity among medical students, a young adult population characterized by high caffeine consumption and irregular sleep patterns. Methods: This research employed a cross-sectional design involving 78 medical students selected through simple random sampling. Eligible participants were non-smokers, abstained from alcohol, had no history of cardiovascular disease, were not taking medications affecting cardiovascular function, did not experience high levels of stress, maintained a healthy diet, and engaged in moderate physical activity. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while caffeine intake was measured using the Caffeine Consumption Questionnaire–Revised (CCQ-R). Vascular elasticity was evaluated using the SA-3000P Accelerated Photoplethysmography (APG). Results: Vascular elasticity showed a significant association with caffeine consumption (p = 0.012) and sleep quality (p = 0.024). In the multivariate model, participants with high caffeine intake had a ninefold higher risk of suboptimal arterial elasticity (p = 0.039; OR = 9.485; 95% CI: 1.116–80.585) after adjusting for sleep quality (p = 0.059; OR = 2.541; 95% CI: 0.967–6.676). Conclusion: High caffeine consumption and poor sleep quality are associated with suboptimal arterial elasticity. Medical students are encouraged to limit caffeine intake and improve sleep habits to maintain vascular health.
