Abstract

Objective The global prevalence of hypertension and prehypertension among adolescents and young adults reaches 10% and 14%, respectively. In young adult university students, hypertension is synergistically influenced by psychosocial stress, sleep disturbances, depression, anxiety, and caffeine consumption, which can trigger endothelial dysfunction and neurohumoral system activation, serving as early predictors of hypertension. This study aimed to analyze the association between psychosocial factors (stress, anxiety, depression, sleep quality) and lifestyle factors (caffeine consumption) with blood pressure among students of the Faculty of Economics and Business, UPN “Veteran” Jakarta, class of 2024. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with a population of 1.204 students, from which 66 participants were selected using simple random sampling. Univariable and bivariable analyses were performed. Results The results showed no significant associations between depression, anxiety, sleep quality, stress, caffeine intake and blood pressure (p > 0.05). These results may be attributed to the cardiovascular homeostasis mechanisms, which remain optimal in young adults, and chronic caffeine exposure containing bioactive compounds with antihypertensive properties, thereby maintaining stable blood pressure. Conclusion In conclusion, depression, anxiety, stress, sleep quality, and caffeine consumption did not significantly affect blood pressure among these students. Nevertheless, it is recommended that both students and institutions continue to monitor mental health and stress management as part of long- term preventive strategies.
