Abstract

The use of metal in the modern era is increasingly widespread, encompassing fields such as construction, automotive, and manufacturing industries. However, metal has a major weakness, namely susceptibility to corrosion. Corrosion is a process of degradation or decrease in material quality due to chemical reactions between metal and its environment, which can reduce mechanical properties and shorten its service life. This study aims to determine the effect of temperature variations and aging time on the corrosion rate of JIS SKD-11 steel. The method used is an experiment through a dry corrosion test using a box furnace on JIS SKD-11 steel. The results showed that the higher the temperature and the longer the aging time, the greater the corrosion rate. Then, these results were proven by Scanning Electron Microscopy - Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) testing, with an oxide layer at a temperature of 800℃ (~52 μm), 900℃ (~183 μm), and 1000℃ (~304 μm). This is related to the increased diffusion rate of metal ions and oxygen at high temperatures. Thus, the higher the temperature and aging time given, the activation energy required for the oxidation reaction to occur decreases, thereby accelerating the corrosion rate of the test material.
