Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of varying mesh sizes (3, 5, and 8) of Anadara Granosa shell powder as reinforcement on the erosion resistance and mechanical properties of an Aluminium 6061 matrix composite. The composites were fabricated using the sand casting method and tested for erosion resistance via sandblasting at a 30∘ impact angle. Material characterization included microstructural analysis using SEM and Vickers hardness testing. The results indicate that reducing the reinforcement particle size (Mesh 8; 2.3 mm) significantly increased hardness (48.05 HV) and provided the best erosion resistance among the composite variants (266.558×10−3cm3/kg). However, all composite variants exhibited higher erosion rates than pure Al 6061 (248.039×10−3cm3/kg). This paradox is attributed to high porosity and a weak interfacial bond resulting from the sand casting process, which triggered a dominant failure mechanism of reinforcement particle pull-out. It is concluded that Anadara Granosa shells have potential as a sustainable reinforcement, but advanced manufacturing methods are essential to overcome microstructural defects and realize the material's potential.
