Abstract

This study examines the role of Indonesia-Japan economic diplomacy in promoting Arabica coffee exports to Japan from 2019 to 2024. Using a qualitative approach with literature review and secondary data analysis, the research identifies bilateral cooperation strategies, such as leveraging the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJ-EPA), trade exhibition promotions, and joint research and certification initiatives. The findings indicate that economic diplomacy has contributed to the growth of Indonesia’s Arabica coffee exports to Japan, despite challenges like global competition, Japan’s strict food safety standards, and the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruptions. The study also highlights the critical role of synergy among the government, businesses, and farmers in strengthening Indonesia’s position as a high-quality specialty coffee supplier in the Japanese market. Policy recommendations include enhancing branding, improving farmers’ capacity, and optimizing bilateral trade schemes to ensure export sustainability.
