Abstract
Maritime security is a strategic issue in international security, particularly for maritime nations like Indonesia. Maritime security is a fundamental aspect in maintaining national sovereignty, regional stability, and the smooth flow of international economic activity. One water area of high strategic value is the Strait of Malacca, a major global shipping lane connecting the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This strait is the second busiest shipping lane in the world after the Suez Canal. More than 100,000 ships pass through the Strait of Malacca annually, carrying approximately 40% of world trade. The high shipping activity in this region not only opens up economic opportunities but also poses strategic risks, making the security of the Strait of Malacca a crucial element of Indonesia's national defense policy and maritime diplomacy. In response to this challenge, the countries surrounding the Strait of Malacca, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, established the Malacca Strait Sea Patrols (MSSP) in 2004. This cooperation includes coordinated sea patrols, joint air patrols through the Eyes in the Sky program, and intelligence exchange through the Intelligence Exchange Group (IEG).
