Abstract

In Indonesia, breast cancer is a priority in the National Cancer Plan. One key strategy for cancer prevention and control is strengthening cancer registries and evidence-based research. Recently, green tea, with Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) as its main catechin, has been widely studied for its effects on cancer progression. However, its current effectiveness remains uncertain. This study aims to summarize and update the role of EGCG in green tea as a chemopreventive agent against cancer cell development, especially breast cancer. A systematic literature review was conducted using four databases: Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, and Springer Open. The search yielded five studies involving EGCG interventions on various breast cancer-related biomarkers, including Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Total Cholesterol, Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), Triglycerides, Insulin, Adiponectin, Estradiol, Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Protein-3 (IGFBP-3), and Mammography Density (MD). The review found that EGCG supplementation can have both positive and negative effects on breast cancer progression, influenced by factors such as age, COMT gene, cancer stage, dosage, and intervention duration.
