Abstract

Type 2 DM complications can contribute to liver damage characterized by AST, ALT, and liver histopathology. Kefir products contain antioxidants and BAL which have the potential as functional food to repair liver damage. This study aims to determine changes in AST, ALT, and liver histopathology in diabetic rats intervened with honey kefir. Clinical study with a pre-post test design were conducted on 42 male rats aged 6-8 weeks weighing 120-150 g for 21 days. The treatment groups were divided into 6: healthy group, diabetic group, quercetin (15 mg/kg BW), metformin (62.5 mg/kg BW), kefir group 1 (1.8 ml/200 g BW), kefir 2 (preventive). Liver function was measured using the kinetic spectrophotometry method and histopathology was analyzed using the microscopic method. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests, followed by post hoc analysis. This study showed that there was a significant difference between treatment groups (p = 0.000) in ALT levels, whereas it had not contributed to reducing AST levels (p = 0.058). There was fatty degeneration in the liver tissue of the KN group. Honey kefir intervention has the potential to reduce ALT levels and reduce damage to liver structure in diabetic conditions.
