Abstract

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a technology that utilizes the temperature difference between warm seawater at the surface and cooler water at depth to generate electrical energy through the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). The selection of optimal working fluid is crucial to improve the efficiency of OTEC systems, so this research analyzes the potential of R290/R22 blends compared to single working fluids R22, R717 and R290 to produce better power and thermal efficiency. The results show that R717 has the highest inlet heating value (Qin) of 1260 kJ/kg, and the highest output power of 6.296 kW, although its thermal efficiency is low. R22, despite having the lowest exhaust heating value (Qout) of 201.1 kJ/kg, produced the lowest power and thermal efficiency (0.973 kW, 4.435%), making it less suitable for OTEC-ORC systems. The (0.7)R290/(0.3)R22 mixture showed better performance with the highest thermal efficiency reaching 6.617%, which compares favorably with other single fluids, although the power generated was lower than that of R717. Therefore, the R290/R22 combination provides a more effective solution to improve the performance of OTEC-ORC systems in converting ocean energy into electricity in a sustainable manner.
