Abstract

This This study aims to analyze the implementation of Indonesia's gastrodiplomacy strategy in increasing the number of German tourists visiting Indonesia during the 2022–2024 period. This strategy is viewed as part of public diplomacy and nation branding efforts, utilizing the richness of Indonesian cuisine as a soft power instrument to shape a positive image of Indonesia in the eyes of the international community, particularly the German public. The decline in German tourist arrivals in 2020 was addressed through a tourism diplomacy strategy that integrated public diplomacy, gastrodiplomacy, and nation branding to rebuild Indonesia’s image and reignite travel interest during 2022–2024. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study method. Data were collected through literature review and documentation. The findings indicate that Indonesia's gastrodiplomacy strategy has been implemented through various initiatives, including participation in international culinary exhibitions, the establishment of Indonesian restaurants in Germany, and collaborations with local media and influencers. These efforts have contributed to strengthening Indonesia’s image as a unique culinary tourism destination, as evidenced by the increasing trend of German tourist visits post-pandemic. However, challenges remain, such as the distribution of ingredients and the lack of international recognition for Indonesian culinary products. Therefore, cross-sectoral integration and the empowerment of the Indonesian diaspora are needed to support the sustainability of this strategy.
