Abstract

The demand for efficiency in the metal manufacturing industry has driven the development of material handling equipment that is strong yet lightweight and economical. This study optimizes the geometric design of a Double Coil Balanced C‑Hook to support simultaneous loading of two wire rod coils through modeling in Solidworks and FEM simulation in ANSYS Workbench, using the Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm as a metaheuristic approach to minimize structural volume. The study focuses on actual operational conditions, assuming equivalent static loading and applying Mild Steel (S275). The initial design exhibited a maximum Von Mises stress of 97.14 MPa, maximum deformation of 15.88 mm, a minimum static safety factor of 2.44, and a fatigue life of 2.29 × 10⁶ cycles, indicating an over‑designed structure. Optimization successfully reduced the analytical-based volume from 0.21 m³ to 0.18 m³ (12 %) and the simulated-based volume from 0.209 m³ to 0.182 m³ (13 %), raising the maximum Von Mises stress to 184.91 MPa and maximum deformation to 25.88 mm. The minimum static and fatigue safety factors decreased to 1.49 and 1.67, respectively, while the fatigue life remained approximately 2.29 × 10⁶ cycles. The optimized design proven in maintaining mechanical strength limits while reducing material mass.
