Abstract
Lower extremity fractures are common injuries in adult and elderly populations, often leading to decreased quality of life and mobility function. Comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes frequently worsen postoperative prognosis. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) scores and the postoperative functional status of patients as measured by the Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS). Methods This research employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 44 postoperative lower extremity fracture patients at Bhayangkara Level I Pusdokkes POLRI Hospital. Comorbidity data were obtained from medical records and assessed using the CCI, while functional status was measured through interviews using the LEFS instrument. The relationship between CCI and LEFS was analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test. Results The mean CCI score of the study subjects was 2.05 ± 2.5. Most patients were in the low-risk category (56.8%). The average LEFS score was 27.86 ± 15.1, indicating very poor functional status.. Statistical analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between CCI and LEFS scores (rho = -0.494, p < 0.001), indicating that higher comorbidity scores were associated with lower patient functional status. Conclusion There is a significant correlation between comorbidity levels measured by the Charlson Comorbidity Index and the functional status of postoperative lower extremity fracture patients. Comorbidity assessment can serve as an important indicator in planning patient rehabilitation and care.
