Abstract

The freight industry is the backbone of national economic development, however, transportation safety is a crucial issue, given the high number of truck accidents. This study aims to analyze the effect of age on driver performance, brain wave activity, and heart rate variability in truck drivers. The research method used Partial Least Squares (PLS) to analyze data from two truck driver age groups 31-40 years and 41-60 years with a baseline age of 20-30 years from 50 truck driver participants. The results showed that age had no significant effect on driver performance in terms of response time and accuracy between age groups (p > 0.05). Brain wave activity (alpha and theta) also showed no significant difference between age groups (p > 0.05). However, there was a striking difference in Heart Rate Variability (HRV) where the 41-60 years age group experienced very significant changes in Low Frequency (p = 0.000), High Frequency (p = 0.000), and LF/HF Ratio (p = 0.047), indicating a decrease in autonomic nervous system response which indicates a decrease in body alertness. Subjective sleepiness level (KSS) showed that the 41-60 years age group experienced lower sleepiness than the younger age group (p = 0.019). This finding indicates that although driver cognitive performance is not affected by age, there are significant physiological changes in the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) of drivers aged 41-60 years.
