Abstract
The steel pipe fabrication industry for the oil and gas industry often finds welding defects in the results of the production process, therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of SMAW welding speed variations on welding results through microstructure and mechanical strength. This study evaluates the impact of speed variations (18 mm/m, 12 mm/m, 6 mm/m) on the resulting weld area, focusing on the integration of the welding zone, hardness, welding defects and the presence of brittle phases such as martensite. The results show that the optimal welding speed occurs at 18 mm/m for pipe thickness of 4 mm and 12 mm/m for pipe thickness of 5 mm because it produces welding joints without defects and perfect welding zone integration, the presence of welding zones namely Weld Zone, Heat-Affected Zone, Base Metal, and the absence of martensite structures in these variations so as to prevent brittleness. This research also emphasizes the importance of automatic and constant control in the SMAW welding process to minimize poor results, especially in regulating electric current and constant welding speed. This study suggests further research on mechanical properties, including tensile tests, impact tests, and non-destructive tests to refine the findings. The results of this study are very important for the steel pipe fabrication industry for the oil and gas industry in order to improve the welding quality of the steel pipe.
