Abstract
In designing ladder frame chassis, the main challenge is to ensure the structure has resistance to dynamic loads in vehicle operation therefore structural analysis is crucial in evaluating the durability of the frame. This work aims to analyze the design of the 16 Ton medium duty truck ladder frame chassis involving the study of frequency based analysis of the truck frame when faced with various operational conditions. This research variation involves 3 frame designs with different number of crossmembers (4, 5 and 6 pieces) which will be given an unloaded and maximum loading of 16 tons and will pass through flat and bumpy roads with speeds of 20 Km/J, 50 Km/J and 80 Km/J. The design of the truck frame was carried out using the aid of Solidwork 2020 software with frequency based dynamic analysis through Ansys 2021 R1 software. The primary material used is AISI A514 Grade A Alloy Steel. The analysis was conducted in two stages: Modal Analysis and Harmonic Response. The results showed that some frequency modes in the three frame designs experienced critical resonance points at speeds of 50 Km/J and 80 Km/J. The maximum amplitude comparative graph during unloaded and maximum loading also found that the load affects the frequency shift and the maximum amplitude, where during unloaded loading the frequency range of 57 Hz - 58 Hz is the frequency with the highest amplitude has the maximum deformation at the highest point still below the allowable deformation, while during maximum loading the frequency shifts into the frequency range of 33,4 Hz – 35,017 Hz the maximum deformation is far above the permissible deformation so that design optimization or the use of spring dampers is needed to reduce the maximum deformation produced and change the frequency with the highest amplitude.
