Abstract
Background: Lumbar Herniated Nucleus Pulposus (HNP) is a major cause of lower back pain, leading to significant functional limitations and decreased quality of life. This condition occurs when the nucleus pulposus protrudes and compresses the spinal nerve root, causing radiating pain, muscle weakness, restricted mobility, and muscle spasm. This case study involves a 65-year-old female patient with lumbar HNP, present for two years following a fall. Physiotherapy evaluation was conducted thoroughly using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain, Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) for strength, Range of Motion (ROM), sensory testing, and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) to assess functional disability. The patient underwent three physiotherapy sessions employing non-invasive modalities: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) for pain relief, Micro Wave Diathermy (MWD) for muscle relaxation and circulation, McKenzie Exercises to correct posture and reposition the disc, and Core Stability Exercises to enhance trunk stability and strength. Outcomes showed reduced pain intensity, improved muscle strength and ROM, and decreased disability level on ODI. This study concludes that appropriate and consistent physiotherapy interventions significantly improve the clinical condition and daily functional ability of patients with lumbar HNP.
