Abstract

In the oil and gas industry, efficiency and safety in the construction of storage tanks are critical factors. One commonly used method is the hydraulic jacking system, in which the J-Hook component of the hydraulic jack plays a vital role in lifting the tank structure. This study aims to optimize the design of the J-Hook to improve safety factors and reduce deformation during the erection process of storage tanks at the Refinery Unit II project of PT. X. The research methodology includes field observation, load calculations based on the actual mass of the tank shell, CAD modeling using SolidWorks 2021, and static structural analysis using the Finite Element Method (FEM) in Ansys 2022 R1. Three designs were evaluated, including the initial and two optimized designs with material variations (A283 Grade C, ASTM A36, SS400, AISI 1045, and ASTM A27). The simulation results for the initial design revealed a deformation of 0.059321 mm, a von Mises stress of 56.9921 MPa, and a safety factor of 3.5969. In comparison, the analysis showed that Optimization Design 2, which utilizes AISI 1045 material, achieved superior structural performance. This design recorded a reduced deformation of 0.036814 mm, a lower von Mises stress of 27.228 MPa, and the highest safety factor of 15. These improvements demonstrate the effectiveness of the optimization in minimizing stress levels, enhancing structural safety, and providing an efficient J-Hook configuration for jacking system operations.
