Abstract

Ships are a means of air transportation that have various shapes and are equipped with propulsion systems to support various functions, such as transporting goods and supporting other maritime activities. As time goes by, the transportation of goods, especially containers, is increasing to adjust to the supply of goods needed. Container ships are ships that are needed in this case, that is why container ships are the first contributor to pollution among the many ships in the world. Therefore, a design solution is needed that can increase shipping efficiency by reducing the resistance that occurs on the ship. In this study, a test was conducted on the effectiveness of adding a windshield to the bow of the ship as an aerodynamic element to reduce air resistance. Simulations were carried out on four speed variations using a 1:31.6 ship model. The dimensions of the Y model windshield used were 329.17 mm high, 636.33 mm wide, and 777.02 mm long, while the X model windshield used was 329.17 mm high, 740.54 mm wide, and 777.02 mm long. The simulation process was carried out using the CFD method with the Volume of Fluid (VoF) method, as well as the SST k-ω turbulence model to capture the airflow and air phenomena. The simulation results show that the presence of a windshield can reduce wind resistance and total resistance. Model Z showed the best performance at a speed of 1,281 m/s with a total drag efficiency of 1.2%. While the Y model was most effective at a speed of 1,281 m/s, with a total drag efficiency reaching 1.1%. This research contributes to the development of more efficient ship designs, especially through an aerodynamic approach to the ship's bow.
