Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the energy conversion efficiency of a Horizontal Axis Tidal Turbine (HATT) through variations in blade length and angle of attack, as well as to analyze its potential application in meeting the electricity demand in the coastal area of the Larantuka Strait. Numerical simulations were conducted using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method under steady-state conditions to calculate torque and power coefficient (Cp) for nine turbine configurations. The simulation results show that the turbine with a blade length of 1 meter and an angle of attack of 10 degrees produced the highest Cp value of 0.68. However, the turbine with a blade length of 2 meters and the same angle of attack, despite having a slightly lower Cp of 0.66, achieved the highest annual energy output of 739.307,64 kWh/year. With an output power of 156.28 kW and an assumed energy conversion efficiency of 90%, the net electrical power obtained is 140.65 kW. Based on the annual electricity demand in Larantuka of 27,372,309 kWh, approximately four units of this turbine are required to meet 10% of total consumption. The selection of this turbine as the optimal model is based on a multi-objective approach that considers a balance between efficiency and energy output capacity. The results of this study are expected to serve as a preliminary reference for the development of tidal current turbine designs and their implementation to support energy security in Eastern Indonesia.
