Abstract
This study examines China's national interests with Taliban after the withdrawal of US troops in 2021, focusing on the dynamics of bilateral relations between China and Taliban. The study aims to examines how China positions Taliban as an absolute requirement to maintain its domestic security, especially Xinjiang, and a key in the security of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. This study uses the theory of national interest by Jutta Weldes which emphasizes the construction of a state's strategic narrative in defining threats and opportunities that make a country's national interests, as well as bilateral diplomacy as a foundation that answers China's national interests. The results of the study show that although China is actively opening bilateral diplomatic channels in terms of economy, politics, and security with Taliban, the realization of investment and implementation of these economic projects has been very slow due to Taliban's domestic security challenges, uncertainty about Taliban's commitment, and Taliban's limited ability to control terrorist groups in its territory. This study emphasizes that China's diplomacy in Afghanistan is motivated by security, which includes Xinjiang which borders Afghanistan and the CPEC project, and strengthens its image as a new hegemonic power, rather than being truly committed to promoting Taliban's development.
