Abstract
Objective Diabetes mellitus is a condition of increased blood sugar levels or hyperglycemia, which can result in the formation of free radicals. An increase of free radicals in the body can cause complications, the male reproductive system being one of them which can cause spermatozoa abnormalities. Free radicals can cause oxidative stress conditions if they exceed antioxidant capacity. The kersen plant contains antioxidants in the form of flavonoids, which have the potential to be used to improve sperm quality in diabetics. This study aims to examine the effect of giving kersen (Muntingia calabura) leaf extract on sperm quality. The sperm quality observed was in the form of sperm concentration and morphology of diabetic mice (Mus musculus) induced by Streptozotocin. Method The research conducted was an experimental study with a type of research using true experimental design. The design of the research results was carried out with a post-test only control group design. This study will compare the concentration and morphology of mice’s sperm between research groups. Result Administration of kersen (Muntingia calabura) leaf extract with doses of 100, 150, and 200 mg/kgBW can increase the concentration and percentage of normal morphology of diabetic mice (Mus musculus) spermatozoa. A dose of kersen leaf extract of 150 mg/kgBW is an effective dose to improve the quality of concentration and morphology of diabetic mice spermatozoa. Conclusion The administration of kersen (Muntingia calabura) leaf extract has been proven to increase the concentration of spermatozoa in diabetic mice (Mus musculus).
