Abstract

Objective: Medical students face numerous academic demands that can lead to academic stress and reduced physical activity, both of which may negatively affect an essential physiological need: sleep. Method: This descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach involving Bachelor of Medicine students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta, from batches 2022, 2023, and 2024. A total of 143 students were selected as the study sample using stratified random sampling. Academic stress data were measured using the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents, physical activity using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire, and sleep quality through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The collected data were then analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Result: A total of 86 students (60.1%) experienced high academic stress. A total of 88 students (61.5%) engaged in low physical activity, and A total of 82 students (57.3%) had poor sleep quality. There was a significant relationship between academic stress and sleep quality (p = 0.001). Meanwhile, there was no significant relationship between physical activity and sleep quality (p = 0.064). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between academic stress and sleep quality. No significant relationship was found between physical activity and sleep quality in this study. Students are encouraged to develop stress management skills and engage in regular morning exercise to improve their sleep quality.
