Abstract

Pre-clinical safety aspect assessment is carried out through toxicity tests with the aim of determaining the potential risks that may arise from exposure to a substance. The andaliman plant (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium DC) possesses antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and anticancer agent, although information regarding the safety of its ethanol fruit extract remains limited to date. The aim of this study was to determine the safety level of andaliman fruit extract using 70% ethanol solvent obtained through the ultrasonic extraction method.This study used 10 female Sprague Dawley rats ehich were divided into two groups, namely control and treatment groups which were given ethanol extract of andaliman frruit 5000 mg/kgBW. The parameters observed include toxicity symptoms, body weight, hematological profile (leukocyte, erythrocyte, platelet, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, and MCHC levels), and blood biochemical profile (ALT and AST). During the observation, no symptoms of toxicity or death were found in the test animals. Ethanol extract of andaliman fruit showed non-toxic properties with an LD50 value> 5000 mg/kgBW, so it was not classified in the GHS category. In addition, changes in body weight on days 1, 7, and 14 did not show significant differences (p> 0.05) compared to day 0. The results of observations of hematology and blood biochemistry profiles also did not show significant differences (p> 0.05) between the control group and the treatment group.
