Abstract
Soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) are rich in flavonoids and possess strong antioxidant activity, making them a promising candidate for skin-brightening agents. Serum gel is a lightweight topical product formulated to address specific skin concerns. This study aimed to evaluate the optimal physical and chemical stability of serum gel containing soursop leaf ethanol extract and to determine the effect of varying concentrations of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) and Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) as gel bases. Five formulations were prepared by combining different concentrations of HPMC (1%, 2%, and 3%) and HEC (1%, 2%, and 3%), all incorporating the extract. Physical and chemical stability tests were conducted over a 35-day storage period. The results indicated that Formulation 5 (HPMC 3% and HEC 1%) exhibited the best overall stability, with a dark brown color, thick texture, characteristic aroma, homogeneous appearance, viscosity of 19,456.67 cPs, pH of 5.81, spreadability of 5.43 cm, adhesion time of 7.27 seconds, and total flavonoid content of 18.652 mgQE/g. In conclusion, the variation in HPMC and HEC concentrations did not affect homogeneity but significantly influenced (p < 0.05) organoleptic properties, pH, spreadability, adhesion, viscosity, and total flavonoid content.
