Abstract

Critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) often experience sleep disturbances due to environmental factors such as noise, lighting, and medical procedures, which impact their physical and psychological recovery. Quality sleep is essential for supporting the immune system and accelerating the healing process. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of an evidence-based nursing intervention using earplugs and eye masks to improve sleep quality among critically ill patients in the ICU of RSUD Tarakan. The sample consisted of two patients who experienced sleep disturbances caused by environmental factors. The results showed a significant improvement in sleep quality after the intervention, with Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ) scores increasing from <50 (poor sleep quality) to >50 (good sleep quality). There was a difference in the level of improvement between the two patients, influenced by pain experienced by one of them. These findings support that the use of earplugs and eye masks is an effective non-pharmacological approach to improving sleep quality in ICU patients.
