Abstract

Scabies is a contagious skin infection caused by the infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. It is frequently found in densely populated settings with inadequate personal hygiene, such as Youth Detention Centers (LPKA). This research aimed to identify the relationship between personal hygiene and scabies symptoms in juveniles at youth detention centers in Tangerang and Jakarta. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was applied. A total of 112 juveniles were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through structured interviews using a questionnaire and analyzed with the chi-square test. The results revealed significant associations between scabies symptoms and skin hygiene (p=0.004), hand and nail hygiene (p=0.002), clothing (p=0.038), towel use (p=0.008), bedding (p=0.003), genital hygiene (p=0.005), and knowledge level (p=0.014). However, no significant association was found between age (p=0.833) and educational level (p=0.354) with scabies symptoms. The study concludes that personal hygiene and knowledge are significantly associated with scabies symptoms. It is recommended to improve hygiene behavior among juveniles, enhance sanitation facilities, and encourage active roles of staff in prevention and case identification.
