Abstract

Hypertension or high blood pressure reaching ≥140/90 mmHg is the leading cause of global death. The main risk factor is central hypertension, where central obesity has a high prevalence in Indonesia. People with central obesity can trigger excessive activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), changes in cytokines derived from fat tissue such as leptin, insulin resistance, and changes in kidney structure and function which ultimately result in high blood pressure. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between central obesity and hypertension in Indonesia at the age of ≥ 18 years. The study design used a cross-sectional study using secondary data from SKI 2023. The study population was ≥ 18 years with a sample size of 791,670 registered in the household and individual level questionnaires which were analyzed after weighting. The analysis was carried out until the multivariate stage using multiple cox regression. The prevalence of hypertension was 33.4% (95% CI: 33.3 - 34.6). Multivariate analysis showed that the risk of hypertension in the central obesity group was 1.436 times (PR 1.436; 95% CI 1.423-1.449) compared to the non-central obesity group after controlling for obesity variables (PR 1.291; 95% CI: 1.279-1.303). It is expected that the community will routinely check blood pressure and measure waist circumference in order to control blood pressure.
