Abstract

The increasing number of private vehicles, which is not proportional to the available parking space on campus, has led to various problems, such as illegal parking and inefficient use of parking areas. This study aims to design and analyze a smart parking automation prototype system based on computer vision using OpenCV and the YOLOv8 algorithm. The system focuses on detecting parking spot availability in real-time through video camera input, with the ability to classify objects entering parking zones as cars, motorcycles, or undefined objects. If a car is detected occupying a spot, the status is marked as "filled"; if a motorcycle is detected, the system issues a warning; and if an undefined object appears, the status remains unchanged. The status data is stored in an SQL database and can be monitored via a Flask-based web interface. The development follows a prototype methodology, consisting of labeling, dataset splitting, preprocessing, augmentation, model training, and testing stages. The implementation results demonstrate that the system can accurately detect vehicle presence within a laboratory-scale setup, providing a strong foundation for further development toward full-scale deployment. This research is expected to serve as an initial solution for implementing intelligent parking management systems in campus environments.
