Abstract
Zinc has an immunomodulator function which makes it a potential therapeutic agent in the treatment of pneumonia. The purpose of the study was to analyze the effectiveness of zinc supplementation on the immune system in children with pneumonia through a systematic literature review. The Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method conducted in June 2024, following the PRISMA guidelines with a focus on Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT). The review results showed that zinc supplementation was significantly effective in reducing pleural effusion duration, accelerating normalization of oxygen saturation levels, lowering fever, and normalizing respiratory rate. Literature data is obtained from PubMed Central, Google Scholar, PLOS, Cochrane Library, and Oxford Academy with a time limit of 2019-2024. The article found is 2,416 articles, nine articles meet inclusion criteria after gradual selection. These articles were analyzed to find similarities, differences, and conclusions regarding the effectiveness of zinc in the treatment of pneumonia in children. The study concluded that zinc positively impacts the immune system of children with pneumonia, reduces symptoms, and duration of hospitalization.
