Abstract
Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most common infections in the ICU that occurs due to the use of ventilators for more than 48 hours. Oral hygiene using chlorhexidine is referred to as the golden standard of prevention strategies in the VAP bundle. However, the use of chlorhexidine is not free from undesirable side effects, such as dry mouth, mucosal irritation, and antibiotic resistance for long-term use. In recent years, the use of herbal medicines, due to their antimicrobial effects and fewer side effects, has been studied in reducing the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia/VAP. This scientific paper aims to analyze the results of oral hygiene interventions using Salvadora Percisa extract solution vs Chlorhexidine 0.2% as prevention of VAP in patients in the ICU. The method used is a Case Study. After the intervention was carried out for five consecutive days twice a day, there was a decrease in the CPIS score with the interpretation that there was no development of VAP in both intervention patients using Salvadora Percisa solution and also Chlorhexidine 0.2%. However, in terms of side effects, side effects were found in patients who were given intervention using Chlorhexidine 0.2% after 5 days of treatment, namely dry lips and tongue, while in patients using Salvadora Percisa no side effects were found. Oral hygiene using Salvadora Percisa can potentially be an alternative material with minimal side effects in supporting the prevention of VAP in patients in the ICU.
