Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a disorder of kidney structure or function, assessed through the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). When GFR falls below 15 mL/min/1.73 m², the condition progresses to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which requires renal replacement therapy such as hemodialysis. One common vascular access for hemodialysis is the arteriovenous fistula (AVF). Pain at the AVF needle insertion site is one of the most frequently reported complaints among patients. To manage this, non-pharmacological interventions like cryotherapy can help reduce pain with minimal side effects. Cryotherapy involves short-term exposure to extreme cold to numb the area before AVF needle insertion. In this study, cryotherapy was administered to intervention patients over four sessions, while the control group received deep breathing relaxation techniques. Pain levels were measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Patients who received cryotherapy reported VAS scores between 4 and 6, while those in the control group reported higher scores, between 8 and 9. It is concluded that cryotherapy is an effective, simple, and low-cost method to reduce pain during AVF needle insertion in hemodialysis patients, with no observed side effects.
