Abstract
The use of composite materials such as fiberglass in the shipbuilding industry continues to grow due to their advantages in high specific strength, corrosion resistance, and lightweight properties. However, joining between fiberglass structural components remains a challenge, particularly in terms of tensile strength and stress distribution. This study aims to analyze the mechanical performance of dovetail joints on fiberglass materials reinforced with carbon fiber layering, focusing on the influence of dovetail angle variation on ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and modulus of elasticity. The specimens were fabricated using the hand lay-up method with dovetail angles of 45°, 60°, and 70°, and tested under ISO 527-4 standard. The results show that a 60° angle produced the best performance, with a maximum tensile strength of 71.79 MPa and the highest elastic modulus of 16,650 MPa. Carbon fiber layering significantly enhanced the joint’s stiffness and strength. These findings affirm that optimizing dovetail joint geometry and incorporating carbon fiber reinforcement are effective strategies to improve the mechanical performance of fiberglass composite joints.
