Abstract
Self-disclosure is one of the indicators of the relationship between children and parents that reflects the laissez-faire family communication pattern. This study aims to find out how adolescents aged 15-18 years in Jakarta carry out the process of self-disclosure to parents that focuses on the child's side. This study uses a phenomenological approach aimed at exploring children's self-disclosure experiences. The theory used is Communication Privacy Management (CPM) which emphasizes individuals in managing personal information and determining boundaries in sharing personal information. The data collection technique used was interviews. The data analysis technique used four levels of exposure, namely horizontalization, presentation of important questions, theme analysis and phenomenological reduction. The results of the study showed that self-disclosure for adolescents in laissez-faire families was interpreted as an action that was full of consideration and selective. The experience of adolescent self-disclosure often causes negative feelings such as sadness, disappointment, and regret for having disclosed themselves. Some adolescents choose to suppress their feelings and/or divert their self-disclosure to peers. The main motive for self-disclosure in adolescents is focused on school and religious matters. This study concludes that low conversation orientation causes adolescents to limit personal information to be shared with parents due to a lack of trust in parents responding well to personal information.
