Abstract

Focusing on the 2016 peace agreement between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the Colombian government, this paper explores the critical role of women in resolving international conflicts. Previously excluded from high-level political processes and conflict resolution, Colombian women overcame significant obstacles to actively participate in peace talks. Using a qualitative methodology grounded in feminist and international conflict theories, this study investigates how women’s participation in the peace process enhanced its effectiveness, sustainability, and inclusivity. One of the study’s key findings is the strategic importance of the Gender Sub-Commission, which ensured that gender-specific issues such as addressing sexual violence, promoting women’s political participation, and fostering post-conflict social justice were integrated into the agreement. The study examines how the participation of female leaders in the negotiation process shifted societal perceptions of women’s roles in peacebuilding and laid the groundwork for gender equality in post-conflict governance. This research also highlights broader implications for international conflict resolution through the lens of this case study. It argues that meaningful involvement of women in peacebuilding at all levels contributes to more inclusive, resilient, and comprehensive agreements.
