Abstract

Steel rope is one of the important components of an overhead crane that is responsible for distributing the load during operations. Steel ropes have several types including based on the core material, including IWRC steel ropes and FC steel ropes. This study aims to determine the effect of load variation on the von misses that occur and the service life of both steel ropes. Using the finite element method and Ansys Workbench R1 software, simulations were performed using 3 loadings, namely 10 tons, 15 tons, and 20 tons. The results stated that the IWRC steel rope has smaller von misses (305.38 MPa, 451.81 MPa, 596.23 MPa) and the FC steel rope has larger von misses (752.87 MPa, 1156.3MPa, 1529.3 MPa). As for the service life, the IWRC steel rope has a longer life (6227.5 cycles, 1888.8 cycles, 912.92 cycles) and the FC steel rope has a shorter life (25,608 cycles, 25,473 cycles, 25,386 cycles).
